The living room has a beautiful, wood burning, native stone fireplace. Also in the living room you'll find a vaulted ceiling, ceiling fan, hardwood floors, and pull-out sofa for extra guests or kids. Other amenities include antique claw-foot bathtub with shower, washer/dryer, AM/FM stereo with CD player, local phone service, and notebook filled with information on local sites and day trips..." Located in Plum Tree
Bakersville Bed and Breakfast
".... The colonial style house was built in 1933 by Dr. and Mrs. A. E. Gouge. There is a carriage house slightly up the hill behind the main house and it is used for BB&B guests with children, small pets, and those anticipating extended stays. Dr. Gouge built an additional structure closer to the street. This was his medical practice. It now serves as Jann's gallery/studio. The BB&B is full of antiques, quilts, a fine art collection representing Jann's works as well as pieces from many other talented arts and crafts people in the region. Guests enjoy a "feet on the furniture" feeling while listening to traditional music in the living room. There are many musical instruments on display and all are encouraged to play, sing along, or simply sit back and enjoy. With a collection of several sets of china, one pattern dating back to 1865, the generous gourmet breakfasts are served with a variety of settings seldom seen at today. Jann and Steve particularly love sharing the large mountainside porch, complete with rocking chairs, with guests and the visiting birds. At present the count is 16 different species frolicking all over seven feeders. George, the 'outside cat' (who came with the house...) is well behaved, well fed, and hasn't disturbed the birdwatching...." Located in downtown Burnsville within walking distance of cafes, galleries and a wonderful creekside walk complete with picnic tables.

Celo Inn
"... Charles and Susannah Jones built the Celo Inn over a period of ten years. They wanted it to be comfortable and lovely, but not precious; affordable and simple, but not primitive. Details borrowed from countless European hostels and inns—cozy dormered nooks, exposed framing timbers, burnished wood, soft tile—were incorporated into their new/old structure. The Inn's massive 6-lite entry door admitted its first guests in 1983, and the warmth and comfort of the Jones' realized vision has been shared by many since then...." Located on State Road 80 South, in the Community of Celo... about 20 minutes South of Burnsville... and near the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Nature of Craft and the Penland Experience "... In honor of its 75th birthday, Penland has created a very special gift that celebrates its own history and that crafters will treasure forever. It is, first and foremost, a visual delight, with 137 images of pieces created by Penland instructors and shown at an anniversary exhibition. But the volume goes beyond the Penland School, with a series of original essays that offer a fresh and inclusive vision of the power of crafting. |
| Written primarily by those outside the field—including a Nobel Laureate chemist—who came to Penland and immersed themselves in the unique experience, these articles look at crafting from the perspective of the anthropologist, scientist, folklorist, sociologist, poet, cultural historian, and critic. Their thoughts prove provocative, highly personal, and unforgettable...." |

The Potter's Eye: Art and Tradition in North Carolina Pottery Classic North Carolina stoneware pots--with their rich textures, monochromatic glazes, and minimal decoration--belong to one of America's most revered stoneware pottery traditions. In a lavishly illustrated celebration of that tradition, Mark Hewitt and Nancy Sweezy trace the history of North Carolina pottery from the nineteenth century to the present day. |
They demonstrate the intriguing historic and aesthetic relationships that link pots produced in North Carolina to pottery traditions in Europe and Asia, in New England, and in the neighboring state of South Carolina. With hundreds of color photographs highlighting the shapes and surfaces of carefully selected pots, The Potter's Eye honors the keen focus vernacular potters bring to their materials, tools, techniques, and history. It is an evocative guide for anyone interested in the art of North Carolina pottery and the aesthetic majesty of this resilient and long-standing tradition. |
|
Turners and Burners: The Folk Pottery of North Carolina "... This richly illustrated portrait of North Carolina's pottery traditions tells the story of the generations of "turners and burners" whose creations are much admired for their strength and beauty. Perhaps no other state possesses such an active and extensive ceramic heritage, and one that is entirely continuous. This book is an attempt to understand both the past and the present, the now largely vanished world of the folk potter and the continuing achievements of his descendants...." |
The best book I have ever read on folk pottery.
Warren E. Roberts, Journal of Folklore Research
Turners and Burners makes an enormous contribution to the study of North Carolina folklife. . . . North Carolinians, rejoice! North Carolina Folklore Journal
