"...Mountain Housing Opportunities, Inc. offers a Downpayment Assistance
Program (DAP) for households with low and moderate income. Below is a

".... is a community development lender and real estate developer that works with qualified individuals, organizations and communities traditionally underserved by conventional markets. The funds that support our work come from deposits, grants, and other investments made by individuals and institutions across the U.S.... "
- We strengthen underserved communities by financing nonprofits, childcare centers, community health facilities, public charter schools and residential and commercial real estate projects.
- We operate a secondary market program that enables private lenders to make more loans in low-wealth communities.
Locating Low Cost Housing

of search criteria with special mapping features and receive apartment

through website links and provides helpful tools for renters such as an
affordability calculator, rental checklist, and renter rights and
responsibilities information...."
North Carolina Housing Coalition

Treehouses: The Art and Craft of Living Out on a Limb "...Treehouses lift the spirits. They inspire dreams. They represent
freedom: from adults or adulthood, from duties and responsibilities,
from an earthbound perspective. If we can't fly with the birds, at
least we can nest with them. With lively writing and beautiful
photographs, Treehouses paints a fascinating portrait of this ingenious
branch of architecture...." |
|
Yurts: Living in the Round "... Case studies and personal stories of yurt dwellers are explored and pictures throughout paint a picture of a peaceful lifestyle lived in natural settings. Some of the pictures show doors of a Mongolian ger, painted in bright colors. There are treehouse yurts, wooden yurts, fabric yurts, camping yurts and communal yurts...." |

Build Your Own Low-Cost Log Home "...This is the best of the cabin building books I've read yet. This book
not only shares great technical detail with quality photographs but
also discusses how to plan ahead to minimize the chance of mistakes.
Discusses what the banks are willing and not willing to finance, land
and site selection for building, type of ground to build upon among
many other topics in addition to very detailed construction methods.
This may be the only book you need...." |
|
Architecture Without Architects: A Short Introduction to Non-Pedigreed Architecture "... This is a wonderful book. Nearly every page introduces me to something
new, and thus broadens my conception of what it means to be a human
being. Flipping through it at random reveals photos of gigantic Syrian
water wheels, Dogon granaries, Spanish arcades, desert fortresses in
Morocco, Italian hill towns, and hollowed-out baobab trees used as
homes. The book is far more than a mere collection of curiosities,
though: it is a challenge to our narrow conceptions of what makes a
building or a city 'legitimate.'.... " |

Volunteer Built Homes
Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity (AAHH) "... We are a nonprofit ministry dedicated to building simple, decent houses with community volunteers in partnership with qualified families currently living in inadequate housing. We have been building houses and changing lives in Buncombe County since 1983.... We are currently building homes in the Enka Hills subdivision in West Asheville...."
Volunteer as a Habitat for Humanity builder, meet people and learn skills.
Mountain Housing Opportunities' Affordable Home Ownership program
".... provides low and moderate income
households the opportunity to own new or renovated homes in Buncombe
County. With flexible mortgage financing and homebuyer education, our
safe, attractive homes in good neighborhoods become affordable.
MHO builds high quality homes that will reduce future energy costs and provide a healthier, more durable dwelling. Focusing our home ownership opportunities in Asheville’s existing neighborhoods fosters local economic development, serves the environment and enhances community quality of life. MHO locates properties for the Self-Help Home Ownership program in
rural areas that are attractive, affordable, and as near as possible to
schools, shopping, and places of employment.
Home mortgages are arranged through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Interest rates vary according to a family’s need and can go as low as 1 percent. The value of a family's labor is used as the down payment on the new home.
As part of the process, qualifying families and individuals learn financial and construction skills necessary to build and maintain their homes. The Self-Help Home Ownership program improves lives by building affordable homes and attractive neighborhoods...."
Affordable Housing Coalition of Asheville - Buncombe County
"... To use the talents and resources of the Coalition member agencies and the Asheville / Buncombe community in promoting a wide range of affordable housing options which lead to thriving, safe neighborhoods and individual and family self sufficiency...."
Volunteer Home Repairs
Since its founding in 1988, MHO has worked with volunteers to provide safety-related home repairs for low-income homeowners in Asheville and Buncombe County. MHO offers rewarding volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
Volunteer repairs may include:
- Building wheelchair/handicap access ramps
- Installing handrails or interior “grab-bars”
- Repairing rotted floors
- Replacing porches and stairs
Volunteers must be at least high school age due to safety requirements and the technical nature of some of the work. However, carpentry experience is not required. Volunteers must only possess a desire to make a real difference in someone’s life. All volunteers work under the supervision of qualified and experienced MHO staff.

Rustic Retreats: A Build-It-Yourself Guide ".... This is a delightful book that promises to deliver loads of fantasy and
fun for anyone in need of a rustic place to rest, relax, and retreat
from the speed and stress of modern living. The Stiles provide more
than 20 step-by-step plans for low-cost outdoor buildings, among them a
grape arbor, a hillside hut, a water gazebo (floating!), a log cabin,
tree houses, a wigwam, a garden pavilion, a yurt, and a river raft. A
bit of individual creativity can make any of the plans described and
diagrammed into unique personal statements or fantasies...." |

How to Build Your Dream Cabin in the Woods "...Everyone dreams of having a cabin in the woods-a wood-hewn structure
with all (or, at least many of) the amenities of home-tucked away on a
mountaintop with an awe-inspiring view, or nestled on the shore of a
trout-filled stream or bass-laden lake. Most people also believe that
such a dream house is just that-the stuff of dreams-not affordable, not
buildable without hiring a construction crew.
Author J. Wayne Fears is here to tell you that such a dream cabin can be yours-at a price that won't break the bank. ..." |
|
Handmade Houses: A Guide to the Woodbutcher's Art "...any of these structures were put together with material hand hewn (no
power tools) from the immediate area and in some cases, homes were
built without one nail pounded- wood joints only.
Other featured houses were artfully assembled from materials salvaged from torn down buildings. |
| I helped out in procuring some of the materials and was amazed by the careful procedures to safley dismantle the structures and process them for inclusion on "new" buildings. Mismatched windows, doors, etc., made for some neat eclectic blendings. Tree branches, metal sculptings, plumbing/lighting, etc., were also artfully blended in...." |

Home Work: Handbuilt Shelter ".... Lloyd Kahn continues his odyssey of finding and exploring the most magnificent and unusual hand-built houses in existence. Among the intriguing domiciles described in Home Work are a Japanese-style stilt house accessible only by a cable across a river; a stone house in a South African valley whose roof serves as a baboon trampoline; multi-level treehouses on the South China Sea; and a bottle house in the Nevada desert. Over 1,500 photos illustrate various innovative architectural styles and natural building materials that have gained popularity in the last two decades such as cob, papercrete, bamboo, adobe, strawbale, timber framing, and earthbags...." |
|
Shelter "... Lloyd Kahn has managed to pull together a stunning catalog of the phenomenon of human shelter through history, across cultures and climates from around the world. Yurts and huts and tree houses and cathedrals of stone. This is an eye-opener for anyone considering building their own home, or anyone just interested in human inventiveness and creativity. With over 1000 photos and drawings of cave houses, communal huts, wooden shacks, tents, domes, towers and holes in the ground, you'll be amazed at all the different ways people have tried to keep the rain off their heads and the wolves outside! -..." |
