When I read forum posts that say how expensive it is to live in Asheville, I have to chuckle ... because I've figured out how to live REALLY well, and spend about half of what most people spend on groceries just by knowing where and how to shop.

For starters, I shop at several grocery stores where I typically buy whatever's on sale that I like and whatever is a good buy at that store. I shop from the 'outside' of the store... the fresh fruits and vegetable and meats (buying ONLY the meat or chicken that's on sale), avoiding the prepared, canned and frozen food, the cookies, cakes, icecream, soda, snacks (except for a $.98 bag of corn chips at Walmart), . When there's a very good deal, I buy a lot of it and stockpile. Then I go to my "discount" stores, one in particular where you can buy the SAME QUALITY of produce and groceries you find at the most expensive grocery store, with the difference being diminished variety and not being able to buy exactly what I want all the time. But what it lacks in variety it makes up for in wonderful surprises, which turns grocery shopping into a never-ending -- and affordable -- treasure hunt.

Here are some of the places I like to shop for groceries.

Amazing Savings: Low Cost Organic and Gourmet Food

Amazing Savings "... is the largest organic and gourmet discount grocer in WNC. We offer a wide variety of organic and gourmet groceries as well as Dairy, produce, and health and beauty products at 50% to 80% off of retail prices. We are a local family owned and operated business...."

This is one of our personal favorites. This is a fun place to shop. The natural food and organic products are excellent. For example, you can often find organic lettuces for $1.49 a bag vs $3.85 or more in a regular store. Below is an order of groceries that cost me about $12 and change... which in a regular store would have cost 2 to 3 times that much. Plus I get to have little 'luxuries' that I probably wouldn't buy otherwise... enabling me to live very well on a small budget.

Note: always check the 'sell by' date, never buy more than one of something without checking to make sure it's fresh (buy it, take it outside and sample, and if fresh, go back and buy some more. You want to do this, because if you find a REALLY 'killer deal', you're going to want to stockpile quite a bit of it.

I find that by buying ONLY those grocery items that are on sale at a substantial discount, and 'stockpiling', I am able to cut my grocery budget in half!

Go Grocery Outlet

This is another excellent source of low-coat groceries. Canned goods, frozen, meats, produce. Typical savings are 25% to 50%. Makes shopping an adventure because you never know what you'll find here.

Good deals on canned goods, frozen foods. Often you can find wonderful strawberries for $1, but much of the produce isn't that inexpensive, so just 'pick and choose'.

How I saved at least $32.00 on 16 Quarts of Strawberries at Go Outlet ... and What I Did With Them When I Got Them Home.

When I do find a really good deal, like $1 (or sometimes even $.50) a quart strawberries, I go through Go Outlet's stock really carefully, choosing ONLY those containers that have no mold, and buy as many of the good ones as I can find. The last time I went, I bought sixteen quarts of really wonderful, perfectly ripe strawberries at $1 per quart. Had I bought them at the regular price, it would have cost me anywhere from $3 to $4 a quart at the going rates. When I get the berries home, I go through each container, separating out the really firm berries from the softer ones, discarding any bad ones. Then I put the firm ones into small freezer bags, suck out as much air as I can, and freeze them. The ones that are softer, I cut out any bad parts, wash them, and cook them with some organic cane sugar and refrigerate. Makes a great topping for the $.99 a package buckwheat waffles I often get at Amazing Savings!
