Crest Mountain
"...Natural Sanctuary, Cosmopolitan Convenience.... Less than five miles from the heart of downtown, it remains isolated enough to be private and peaceful. The property itself just might be 'the prettiest piece of land in Buncombe County,' but the breathtaking views are Crest Mountain’s true claim to fame...."
The Thoms Estate ... a Dream Fulfilled
.... we are building new cottages and homes that draw on these Old World traditions. Even at a glance, the link will be unmistakable in the design vocabulary of these homes. Stone and stucco. Massive, hewn timbers. Herringbone brick accents. Copper half-round gutters. Clay tile or slate roofs. Wrought iron. And details on every scale, from massive-yet-elegant chimneys to the smallest architectural hardware, whose undeniable goodness will give pleasure to all who behold them. Homes will be clustered in small, crescent-shaped enclaves. From the front of your home, you can readily greet your neighbors. Out the back, you will look on nothing but green fields and trees: your own private, idyllic preserve. And your home is designed let daily living flow in and out of this green-space thanks to abundant glass rear glass and doorways... create a well-worn, well-loved, timeless atmosphere enhanced by an outdoor kitchen and fireplace..... depending on the home design and details you select, the outside wall of your master bath shower may be glass, enabling you to look out on an enclosed, private garden and thereby make a simple necessity a celebration of nature..... you can maintain a private garden on your grounds if you choose, or have your garden maintained by Estate staff. Either way, we will maintain the rest of your grounds as a matter of course....."
About The Manor House
The social and cultural center of the new community arising on The Thoms Estate will be The Manor House – Harold Thoms’ original Dream House – in a greatly expanded form. Its new amenities will reflect the engaged and engaging nature of those drawn to live on the Estate.
For instance, to the left of the foyer (in which guests for events will be received, registered, and treated to valet parking) a lending library will encourage literary pursuits ranging from dreamy browsing to writing that long-deferred novel or enjoying readers’ theatre, discussion groups, poetry readings, and guest authors. The library opens onto a covered porch with an outdoor fireplace. If a book should fall closed in your lap on some autumn afternoon as you read and rock by this hearth, no one will fault or awaken you.
Across the foyer, rooms served by a catering kitchen will host gatherings, celebrations, exhibitions, and cultural events. French doors connect this wing to a terrace ringed by large hardwood trees, creating a flowing indoor/outdoor space for fair-weather festivities. Another expansive terrace adjoins the rear of the house, and includes a complete outdoor kitchen as a focal point for gala and informal outdoor entertaining.
One level down, an espresso, wine, and spirits bar will extend a warm, inviting, pub-like atmosphere, open to the breeze or buttoned up as weather dictates. Darts and chess (the latter on permanent, stone boards) will make sporting and cerebral visitors feel equally at home, and private wine and liquor lockers for residents will complement the Estate’s own stores in the wine cellar. A pottery studio will also occupy part of the lower level, taking advantage of an opportune, naturally cool space for a kiln and potter’s wheels.
In back of the house, those who relish aquatic exercise will enjoy an indoor/outdoor two-lane lap and water aerobics pool. Another nearby pool will be perfect for frolicking grandkids and (when the frolics are not in full effect) for floating naps and sunbathing. A water feature flowing into this pool will add soothing sounds to the ambience. Beyond the pools, a state-of-the-art fitness facility will augment the natural fitness effects of our 83 acres with a full array of exercise equipment, an aerobics room and dance / tai chi / yoga studio, sauna and whirlpool, and treatment rooms in which practitioners of massage and other healing arts can be booked by arrangement with the Estate’s concierge couple.
That’s right. On the Thoms Estate, a resident concierge couple will be cheerfully committed to the comfort, convenience, and pleasure of the community. They will provide practical and cultural services ranging from opening and re-stocking the homes of returning travelers, to arranging for cultural events, festivities, and Estate-based educational opportunities based on the interests and wishes of community members...."

The Geography of Bliss |

The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World: ".... Asheville, North Carolina, with its idyllic mountain setting and proliferation of good restaurants and New Age healing spas, is enjoying a vogue as a happy place to live. As one newly arrived resident puts it, "A lot of people spin the globe and their finger stops on Asheville."
"....the author is correct, nice weather, affordable housing, lovely scenery, and a slower pace of life, yet an active cultural scene..." |
From Rolf Potts' Vagabonding blog:
I've never been one of those uptight literary types who thinks that you have to have actually read a book in order to recommend it to others. So I feel no trepidation in suggesting Eric Weiner's new travelogue-slash-memoir The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World The premise of the book is simple but intriguing-- here is Amazon's description:
Part foreign affairs discourse, part humor, and part twisted self-help guide, The Geography of Bliss takes the reader from America to Iceland to India in search of happiness, or, in the crabby author's case, moments of "un-unhappiness." The book uses a beguiling mixture of travel, psychology, science and humor to investigate not what happiness is, but where it is. Are people in Switzerland happier because it is the most democratic country in the world? Do citizens of Singapore benefit psychologically by having their options limited by the government? Is the King of Bhutan a visionary for his initiative to calculate Gross National Happiness? Why is Asheville, North Carolina so damn happy? With engaging wit and surprising insights, Eric Weiner answers those questions and many others, offering travelers of all moods some interesting new ideas for sunnier destinations and dispositions.
In the imaginary Netflix queue of books-that-I'm-planning-to-read, this one has just jumped to the top. By the way, why has no one started a Netflix for books? This question, and many more, I'll leave for another day.

Green Housing
".... Green building, or sustainable design, is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings and their sites use energy, water, and materials, and reducing building impacts on human health and the environment over the entire life cycle of the building. Green building concepts extend beyond the walls of buildings and can include site planning, community and land use planning issues as well...."

Finding Your Way in Asheville is ".... a different kind of guide book. Instead of offering glossy photos and paid insertions from big bucks advertisers, it gives you the kind of information you'd get from a best friend who moved to Western North Carolina twenty years ago. "I've discovered the greatest place for a romantic dinner," she'd say. "Just around the corner from Pritchard Park. Here, let me draw you a map." It's a selective guide in that the authors share the places they've come to love while living, working, dining out, partying, biking, hiking, canoeing and raising children in the "Paris of the South." |

Few people realize what effort it took to design and construct the largest private residence in the United States, but this book details it all from the breaking of the ground to the designing of the curtain rods.
