Discover and Celebrate the Ghosts, Legends and Mysteries of the Western North Carolina Mountains

Asheville, and indeed all of Western North Carolina, have historically been the subject of numerous legends and reports of hauntings, ghosts, and unexplained paranormal phenomenal. Numerous books have been written on the subject, and entire festival has been created around one supposed paranormal phenomena: the Brown Mountain Lights.

Asheville Societies for Investigating Paranormal Experiences

Asheville Paranormal Society
"... We are a diverse group of people with a strong interest in the paranormal. We approach each investigation from a scientific point of view. We are open-minded but skeptical. We do spirit rescues and spirit cleansings if needed. We are the only group in Asheville that does this. Our services are free to everyone...." Their site offers brief but comprehensive information on ALL of the various Asheville hauntings and ghost stories. They also have a Meetup Page "...Our group is open to anyone with an interest in the paranormal. I believe in giving members a chance to partcipate in an investigation, no matter their level of experience. But those interested must be serious and professional. We are serious investigators, using scientific methods. our services are free..." Their site also has many "ghost" photos... incluing many "orb" photos (see Joshua Warren's report on Brown Mountain Lights for possible causes).

Haunted Asheville Ghost Tours

Asheville Ghost Tour
"...Step into the world of the unknown with the Ghost Tour of Asheville for a hair-raising ninety-minute tour into the spirit realm of this mountain town. Join us as we take a leisurely stroll and search along the shadowy streets of downtown Asheville, to hear stories of the unexplained and the strange. Hear about haunted buildings in the downtown area, about a brutal murder that occurred here and the young victim that still haunts the building it occurred in. Learn about the old county jail where six legal hangings and several lynchings occurred and how those spirits terrorized the inmates and jailors one night. Listen to a true and bizarre story that started in Asheville and concluded in Florida, and much more. See paranormal pictures taken on the tour of ghost spirits and poltergeist orbs...."

Joshua P. Warren's Haunted Asheville Tours and Books

Joshua P. Warren's 'Official' Walking Haunted Asheville Ghost Tour
"... Starting at Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria, Site of Asheville's Largest Mass Murder November 13, 1906. Bring your digital camera! You WILL get a paranormal photo or your money back! ASHEVILLE is a haunted city. These mountains are the oldest in the world, and bear the residues of Native American spiritualism, the bloody Civil War, and some of history's most dynamic personalities. Psychics are drawn here from around the globe, mysterious "vortex" energy is reported, and paranormal investigation thrives. Based on the acclaimed work of best-selling author Joshua P. Warren, these tours explore Asheville's most enchanting and eerie sites. You'll learn about the Pink Lady who haunts the Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa, chilling apparitions from suicide at Helen's Bridge, a young lady brutally murdered in the Battery Park Hotel, spirits from the madman who executed our city's largest killing spree, tortured souls at the 1889 WhiteGate Inn, a body entombed in the wall of St. Lawrence, and much more. Not only will you experience Asheville's dark underbelly, but you'll also learn about ghost hunting yourself. It's the original adventure produced by Asheville's original ghost expert...."

"... Experience Helen's Bridge. See the legendary Grove Park Inn. Relax on our trolley as you weave and twist through the oldest, and most haunted, mountains in the country. You'll explore the site of Asheville's largest mass murder, the phantoms of Church Street, Thomas Wolfe's House, the Civil War Battle of Asheville, and many more chilling sites. You'll learn of a body entombed in St. Lawrence, tortured souls at the 1889 WhiteGate Inn, a young lady's notorious murder at the Battery Park, and why psychics call Asheville a "vortex." It's for the whole family, yet not for the faint of heart! This is our most fun tour, augmented by a bit of theatrics...."

Here are books authored by Joshua Warren:

Haunted Asheville "... A beautiful young woman dies from a fall in Asheville's greatest hotel . . . and the Pink Lady is said to still wander the massive halls of the Grove Park Inn. A building is constructed on the grounds of a miserable, ancient cemetery . . . now they say you can still hear strange noises at night in the halls of Clyde A. Erwin High School.
In 1908, a group of prisoners finally comes to Christ . . . after being terrorized at night by a spook in the Buncombe County Jail. A distraught mother hangs herself from the rafters of a looming Beaucatcher Mountain bridge . . . and the legend of Helen is born. These stories and more can be found within the pages of this remarkable book...."
How to Hunt Ghosts : A Practical Guide "...When I picked this book up at the store, I literally couldn't put it down. I bought it and consumed it in one evening. I have since re-read it twice. It is extremely well written, Mr. Warren is clearly both knowlegable and experienced. He takes a very practical and scientific approach to the question, and it is an educational experience to read this book even if you have no interest in the paranormal.
Joshua P. Warren's Pet Ghosts: Animal Encounters from Beyond the Grave "...includes not only the author's own experiences with his dog, but interviews animal experts and provides tools and techniques for finding and recording a pet's spirit. If humans can have ghosts - why not pets? ...."

He has one chapter devoted as a practical, step by step how to, and it is really concise and complete...."

Haunted Places Along the
Blue Ridge Parkway

".... some ghost stories that originate from locations very near the Blue Ridge Parkway..." Covers an interesting assortment of hauntings in both Virginia and North Carolina.

Haunted Asheville: The Long Halloween
This is a free pictorial Haunted Asheville tour, with photos of the various haunted sites, and a brief description of the activity that caused the haunting. Here are some of the 'hauntings' it covers:

  • City Hall "....the city finance manager jumped to his death from the roof, and it's believed that he's the resident ghost of City Hall. He appears in the basement snack bar, wearing an old-fashioned suit and bowler hat, where he waits patiently in line, only to disappear as he approaches the counter..."
  • Barley's " ... was built near the epicenter of Asheville's worst mass murder. In November, 1906, an habitual felon named Will Harris became enraged when a woman he was infatuated with refused to have anything to do with him. He shot his way down Eagle Street, then up Broadway, killing five, screaming that he was the devil and didn't care if he got sent back to hell. He was, a few days later during a snowstorm when he was tracked down and cornered near the Biltmore Village train yards, and shot nearly a hundred times. Today, Barley's reports misbehaving elevators, voices, phantom lights, and most bizarre, phantom pedestrians seen strolling past the second floor windows...."
  • Basilica of St. Lawrence "... the parish house next door and across a little courtyard, is haunted by a priest who keeled over in 1983 while watching The Thornbirds mini-series...."
  • Battery Park Hotel "... in July, 1936... New York socialite Helen Clevenger, visiting the city with her uncle, was found murdered in room 224.... Miss Clevenger, bloody and disoriented, is sometimes seen staggering through the halls on stormy summer nights like the one on which she died....in 1943 and 1972, when two men, Clifton Alheit and Michael Byrnes respectively, jumped from the roof.... There's no telling which one it is, Alheit or Byrnes, but the Asheville Police Department has actually taken calls from horrified witnesses who say they saw a body falling from the roof of the Battery Park and vanish halfway down...."
  • Chicken Alley "...a scruffy little lane that runs from Woodfin Street, makes a 90 degree turn, and ends at Carolina Lane. It's always been seedy, and it's haunted by the ghost of Dr. Jamie Smith, who was knifed in a bar fight at a Chicken Alley tavern in 1902...."
  • Church Street ".... like many downtown streets, was built over a filled-in ravine. The difference is that the little cemeteries at the churches that give the street its name were not relocated first. Perhaps as a result, the ghosts on Church Street include a woman in old-fashioned clothing who appears to be searching for something and a nun.. . First Presbyterian has its very own ghost -- a woman in a black dress affectionately known as 'Black Abbey.'..."
  • City gallows ".... The town gallows of Asheville were located at the spot where Merrimon Avenue intersected with Broadway... On May 29th, 1835, James Sneed and James Henry, convicted of stealing a horse, were hanged. Sneed and Henry went to their deaths proclaiming their innocence. Paranormal phenomena centers around phantom sounds that include the clip-clop of horses' hooves, the sounds of a horse drawn wagon passing by, and the unmistakable sound of a gallows trapdoor slamming open...."
  • Jackson Building"... is haunted by a suicide who flung himself from the roof upon losing his fortune in the stock market crash. A man in a 1920's-era suit has been seen in the open air gallery on the top floor, looking forlornly out over the city. He was captured on film once in the early 80's while the building was closed for renovation, when no one at all should have been in the building...."
  • Miles Building "... was built in 1901 as a gentlemen's club before conversion into an office building. Among its tenants today is the city's local independent weekly, the Mountain X-Press. It's in the X-Press offices that staffers have heard the sound of someone settling into a squeaky swivel desk chair in an empty office, and where they have seen a man's arm in a white dress sleeve reaching out of the air toward a desk before disappearing...."
  • Pritchard Park ".... was used as a staging area for local Civil War soldiers marching off to battle. Ghosts in the park include phantom mists and lights, and a confused-looking Confederate soldier...."
  • S&W Cafeteria Building ".... a ghostly little girl has been seen on the interior balcony that overlooks the main dining room, in addition to a waiter in the hallway to the kitchen who will not hesitate to walk through anything or anyone in his way. In the kitchen itself, the cooler doors open and close on their own...."
  • Thomas Wolfe House "...is not "officially" haunted. Nevertheless, visitors and employees at this North Carolina State Historic Site have seen the ghost of a woman in the dining room, the ghost of a man rocking in a rocking chair in an upstairs bedroom, and a face peering from an upstairs window at night after the house is closed to tours. In addition, the sounds of a phantom typewriter clacking away have been heard in the house...."

Brown Mountain Lights

Brown Mountain Lights
".... Seen and investigated for more than a century, a tantalizing mystery remains unsolved in the mountains of North Carolina.... The Brown Mountain Lights are one of the most famous of North Carolina legends. They have been reported a dozen times in newspaper stories. They have been investigated at least twice by the U.S. Geological Survey. And they have attracted the attention of numerous scientists and historians since the German engineer, Gerard Will de Brahm, recorded the mysterious lights in the North Carolina mountains in 1771...."

Joshua Warren's L.E.M.U.R. "Report on the Cause of the Mysterious Brown Mountain Lights"
Here is a rather lengthy synopsis of Warren's Hypothesis which is fully explained in his MUCH more involved report which is well worth reading:

1. ".... the most likely explanation was that those primary illuminations traditionally known as the 'Brown Mountain Lights' are a form of plasma, the fourth state of matter, naturally produced by the mountain...."

2. "... Layers of quartz and magnetite on the mountain create natural capacitors.... Layers of conductors and dielectrics store electrical energy to a critical point until a powerful discharge occurs...."

3. "... There are cavernous holes that run throughout Brown Mountain (some of them can be seen on trails with water running swiftly below). As water runs through the mountain, it charges the layers of quartz and magnetite, in effect charging the mountain's capacitance...."

4. "...At night, the mountain cools and contracts, bringing the layers of quartz and magnetite closer together, resulting in electrical discharges, particularly after water has run through the structure...."

5. "...Discharges from the natural capacitance presumably provide the most outstanding electrical activity, but strong winds (known as zephyr winds) that blow through the valley building high electrostatic charges may also contribute...."

6. "....As electrical discharges occur, the quartz resonances create complex, overlapping harmonic frequencies, or nodes, similar to those important to tuning Tesla Coils...."

7. "....When numerous discharges, between the mountain and the atmosphere, occur simultaneously from various cliffs and rock overhangs, they sometimes intersect. These points of intersection create points of electrical momentum where one or more discharges swirl. These 'pivot points' sometimes spin fast enough to oscillate at a rate in the visible electromagnetic spectrum.... the traditional lights are simply the only small, visible portion of a much larger invisible discharge. Their appearance as self-contained spheres is an illusion. As a discharge occurs, sometimes lasting many seconds, the "ball" of light moves back and forth along the layers of discharge and usually winks out once the discharge is complete. More rarely, the pivot point will rise with the shaft of discharge, appearing to strobe or pulsate with the spin, as it floats upward into the atmosphere. The lights are probably occurring more often than believed, but simply are not oscillating fast enough to enter the visible electromagnetic spectrum...."

8. "... If this model is correct, it might explain how most, if not all, ball-lightning-type manifestations are created: they are not truly self-contained, but are simply the only visible portion of large columns of intersecting electrical discharges following pathways partially determined by electromagnetic nodes. This may especially explain such lights seen over railroad tracks or streams: areas where numerous discharges may originate from various points in a small area and touch each other a short distance above ground...."

Warren's Report goes on to discuss
Predicting the Appearance of the Lights

"... Though there are many complex variables involved in the production of the Brown Mountain Lights, L.E.M.U.R. believes you have the best chances of seeing them when the following conditions are met:

1. You are viewing the area in late October or the first half of November (due to temperature change and increased visibility with leaves off the trees)

2. It is either raining, or a rain has recently occurred

3. The Kp index reads a 5 or above, indicated by a red bar (see www.LEMURteam.com for a live report)

4. There is an increased level of carbon in the air due to campfires or forest fires..."

Brown Mountain Lights Festival
"... What are they? What could they be doing here? Where can I see them? Are they real? These and other questions will be drawing hundreds of visitors to the village of Linville Falls, NC ,,, for the ... annual festival held in celebration of these mysterious colored lights that have appeared for centuries upon a nearby ridge top. As in last year’s fest, mountain music will be an eminent feature joining a lecture series on Saturday to celebrate what is perhaps the most famous of North Carolina’s natural mysteries. Regional fine arts and crafts will be exhibited and offered for sale..."

Discover the Fascinating Legends, Mysteries and Ghost Stories of Western North Carolina via Books

Weird Carolinas ".... Roger Manley has searched the backroads of North and South Carolina and collected a wonderfully odd collection of folk tales, ghost stories, and urban myths. Beautifully illustrated, the book covers a wide spectrum of "weird" topics ranging from UFO's to child ghosts to self-taught artists who have created their own, alternative universes. This book is a great read - it's fun, informative, and just plain weird!..."
Asheville Ghosts and Legends "... Nestled in the heart of North Carolina's share of the Smoky Mountains, Asheville is one of the South's most haunted cities. The picturesque landscape of this charming mountain destination belies what is in truth a violent, ghoulish past.
Asheville has seen its share of horror, ranging from the suicide of the city's financial manager during the throws of the Depression, to hosting a tuberculosis sanatorium, to a night of murderous rampage in 1902... steer readers on a journey through the city's eeriest sites, from Riverside Cemetery to the Battery Park Hotel...."
Unsolved Disappearances in the Great Smoky Mountains "... This book is a 'must read' for anyone who enjoys the challenge of untangling a web of the unknown mixed with the truth. The authors not only furnish an excellent accounting of factual events, they often challenge the readers to draw their own conclusions. Are these people really missing in the mountains? Are they dead? Did some step into the realm of the unknown? Or did they use the mountains simply as an escape route, knowing they could never be found...."
Smoky Mountain Ghostlore "... This is a collection of ghost and paranormal tales. Most of the events in this book cannot be explained with the knowledge that humankind has acquired to this time and place. There are 22 stories, many told by the person who experienced the event. Here are some from the Table of Contents:

Amazing North Carolina ".... This is a great book. I enjoyed visiting many of the sites written about in the book, and to know the "believe-it-or-not" stories behind what I visited. This is a book everyone can read and enjoy. With its short stories, trivia games, and recipes, it can go from the car, to the bathroom, and the kitchen! Stories I liked best: the ghost stories, lighthouse stories, Civil War and sports tales...."
Mountain Mysteries ".... A near-obsessive pursuit of ghost stories and odd superstitions cranks up this serious study of Appalachian tales of the supernatural and their origin in both old-world customs and real historical events. An effort to preserve and record one aspect of a dying way of life, the book relies on interviews and historic documents to search for the facts behind local lore of murder, witchcraft, and weird hauntings. Several campfire-worthy ghost stories are
recounted in their entirety—including "The Swinging Gate of Fern Lake Hollow"—and an unexpectedly large number of stories about aliens and UFOs provide an interesting comparison of three-century-old mysteries and those stirred up in comparatively recent times..."
Smoky Mountain Mysteries ".... is a collection of stories about the magnificent mountains and unique people of Southern Appalachia. ... Most of the stories are true, the others an intriguing mixture of fact and folklore.... Why are the mountains always smoky? How did the Melungeons get to America first? A ghost frolics in Sevierville, Tennessee! Ghosts dance on Hazel Creek in North Carolina! Who wrote on Judaculla Rock? Unsolved riddle - lights on Brown Mountain. And many more... "
Best Ghost Tales of North Carolina, 2nd Edition ".... the stories about Aycock Auditorium, the Grove Park Inn, and Thalian Hall are wonderful. I especially appreciated that she took the time to give her readers information about the best places available to view the Brown Mountain lights. The chapter about how to conduct a ghost hunt was also enjoyable and the list of resources was excellent...."
